Eclipse embodies Hilary Hahn’s deep dive into the Dvořák Violin Concerto, her obsession with the tantalizing, magical weirdness of Ginastera’s Violin Concerto, and her inhabitation of Sarasate’s spirited Carmen Fantasy. Hahn has a very long history with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony: her work with Andres Orzco-Estrada is extensive and musically liberated. With these pieces, they all gathered to create something powerfully beautiful in a difficult time. This recording tells stories Hahn didn’t understand until she returned to the stage after a long hiatus: the elation of coming into one’s own, the declaration of an artistic identity, and what it means to regain your native language through music.
