\The history of the theremin is shrouded in mystery! When Leon Theremin devised his innovative instrument in 1920, his home country, Russia, was in the midst of civil war. He left his home, made his residence in the United States, and later gained the patent for the “hands off” instrument. Clara Rockmore was a violin virtuoso who developed proficiency with the delicate instrument. Theremin left the U.S. suddenly in 1938, under a cloud of secrecy and international intrigue, returning over 30 years later. Meanwhile, Rockmore established her renown with electronic instruments playing classical music.

This CD includes 13 performances by Clara Rockmore and Nadia Reisenberg (piano) as well as three arrangements for theremin with string ensembles, which were recorded at the request of Robert Moog in 1975 but not published. Clara Rockmore’s artistry is featured in MIM’s Artist Gallery.
