This beautiful sculpture was hand-carved from satinwood by an artisan
in Bali, Indonesia. It is made of two pieces depicting a musician playing the Bonang—an instrument used in traditional Gamelan performances.
The Gamelan is a staple of Indonesian culture and often accompanies dance, wayang puppet performances, and ceremonies.
MIM’s Gamelan exhibit has been one of the Asia Gallery’s largest and most popular displays since the Museum’s opening. It dates from the late nineteenth century and is a vast ensemble of hanging gongs and elegant bronze-keyed melodic instruments displayed with a complete set of shadow puppets.
