Acoustic America: Iconic Guitars, Mandolins, and Banjos
This handsome catalog accompanied MIM’s special exhibition, Acoustic America: Iconic Guitars, Mandolins, and Banjos and features full-color photography of historic stringed acoustic instruments—mandolins, guitars, banjos, ukuleles, and more—that have shaped generations of American music since before the Civil War and have been played by the heroes of folk, blues, and bluegrass music. The text was written by Richard Walter, PhD, MIM’s senior curator for United States / Canada.
MIM’s exhibition presented 90 instruments that illustrated the overlapping histories of exceptional soloists and songwriters, groundbreaking manufacturers, and novel inventions and demonstrated how diverse origins combined into enduring traditions. Some examples came from private collectors, including 30 special instruments from the personal collection of David Grisman, which are on public display for the first time.
