Note by Note: the Making of Steinway L1037
The process of building a Steinway piano illustrates the value of handcraftsmanship in a time of mass production. While most listeners value the sound of a finely made piano, the significance of skill, patience, and love for the instrument that goes into the making of a concert grand piano is often secondary to the immediacy of the performance. This DVD documentary traces the building of a fine piano, from forest to concert hall, in celebration of the exceptional people who contribute their skills to the final outcome of music on an extraordinary instrument. Portions of this recording can be seen in MIM’s exhibit on building the Steinway piano.
