
Nay and Kawala Flutes
Kawala Flute
The kawala is an end-blown flute originally used by shepherds. It is made of a common reed but is wider than a nay and lacks a thumbhole. While formerly part of folk music, it now has a respected role for soloists who value its rich tones.

Nay Flute
Reed flutes hold an honored place in North African and Middle Eastern music. The nay is an end-blown flute known from Egyptian carvings of five thousand years ago. It continues into classical and modern Arabian music with few changes. Nays are made of a common reed and have seven holes (six in front and one for the thumb).
