Haitian Painted Heart
This truly beautiful heart was made by the Haitian artisan Simon Gerald who creates metal sculptures from recycled oil drums. Using cardboard patterns and chalk, he traces his designs on the flattened metal and then uses hammers and chisels to hand cut the designs.
Haitian steel drum sculpture (fer découpé) was developed in the 1940s by Georges Liautaud in Croix-des-Bouquets, a town near Port-au-Prince that was a dumping ground for used 55-gallon steel drums. Our source for steel drum sculptures is a member of the Fair Trade Federation.
